Student Engagement and Questioning

Welcome! 1st grade Teachers

Objectives:

1. Understand Student Engagement and ways to get there!

2. Creating better questions to get our students thinking and meet the CCSS.

Agenda:

1.  What is active student engagement / what is not active student engagement? Active student listening!!!!  ( put teachers into pairs and discuss with each other # 1 and 2) Pair and share strategy.

-  Poster boards.  list active/ non active engagement.

2. Discuss examples as a whole group . What does active engagement look like?  What doesn’t it look like?

Examples: “defiance, off task, ..”.  Sometimes we punish kids for being actively engaged!!!.

3. Teachers will  list and then rank strategies they use in their classroom for active engagement.   (  Number 1-27 what they use most to least. ).  Thumbs up when groups are ready.  


4..  Share Anita Archer Video.  Think time strategy.



5.  60 second brain break video activity from Alycia’s blog. Movement strategy.
